WebP is Google’s modern image format and, just like GIF, supports transparency and, in particular, animations. The WEBP format is technically far superior to GIF in practically every respect, but is not yet supported everywhere. Some forums, websites and programmes do not yet consistently support WebP, so conversion to GIF may be necessary.

GIF really comes into its own with animations: short loops, reaction images, memes. For static images, it’s worth taking a look at the colour palette: GIF can display a maximum of 256 colours. This isn’t a problem for graphics, logos or screenshots, but for photos with subtle gradients, the result may appear grainier. Both formats support transparency, albeit in different ways: alongside the three colour channels – red, green and blue – WebP stores a fourth channel: the alpha channel. This determines the opacity of each individual pixel, ranging from 0% to 100%. This allows a shadow to let the background show through or an edge to fade softly. GIF does not support this: a pixel is either there or it isn’t. Depending on the image content, a GIF animation can therefore appear ‘harsher’ and the edges often look jagged, whilst WebP looks more like a video.
